How post-diagnostic support can be used in practice

This example is based on anonymised work with families.

A family we supported

Online

For some families, this type of work helps build on the understanding gained from a diagnosis and supports more practical application in everyday settings.

The situation

The family sought support following their child’s autism diagnosis. While the diagnosis provided some clarity, there was still uncertainty about how to translate this into day-to-day support. Their child was finding school increasingly difficult, with rising anxiety around attendance and frequent moments of distress during the school day.

Our work together

Sessions focused on building a clearer understanding of the child’s experiences, including sensory sensitivities, environmental demands, and how these interacted with the expectations at school. Practical strategies were identified for both home and school, including ways to support regulation, reduce sensory demands, and respond more effectively to signs of distress.

The outcome

Over time, the family developed a clearer understanding of what was contributing to the difficulties at school and how these could be supported. This informed more focused conversations with the school, leading to adjustments such as changes to the environment, opportunities for breaks, and a more consistent understanding of the child’s needs across settings.

For some families, this type of work helps build on the understanding gained from a diagnosis and supports more practical application in everyday settings.

Feedback from people we’ve worked with

Reflections and experiences shared by individuals and families our team have supported in practice.

“It was helpful to meet other people who understood what things can feel like day to day. It made a difference being able to share experiences with others who just got it.”

Feeling understood by others
“We worked things out together, and I started to understand how much masking was affecting me. It absolutely helps me get through work, but I now know to build in time for myself after.”

Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions about our post-diagnostic support programmes.

One-to-one sessions may be helpful if you would prefer individual support at your own pace. Group sessions are suited to teenagers who are comfortable in a shared setting and would benefit from hearing from others. Flexible sessions offer the option to access support as needed, without committing to a series of sessions. If you’re unsure, this can be discussed with your clinician.

Before you book:

  • Cancellations require 48 hours' notice to be eligible for a reschedule.
  • Session bundles are subject to our Refunds Policy — once a bundle has started, refund rights may be limited.
  • Group programmes may require a non-refundable deposit.
  • Support sessions are not emergency or crisis support. If you need urgent help, contact NHS 111, your GP, or call 999.
  • Sessions are individual unless family or group support is expressly booked.
