Adult Autism Assessment
Our adult autism assessments are for people aged 18 and above who are considering whether they may be autistic. We recognise that many people come to assessment later in life, often after years of uncertainty, and aim to provide a clear, thoughtful and well-structured process.

About autism
Many adults who seek an autism assessment describe feeling different for a long time without fully understanding why. Over time, people may develop ways of adapting socially, sometimes described as masking or camouflaging.
Autism in adulthood can present differently from childhood, particularly for those who were not identified earlier. Experiences can also vary across individuals, including across gender, communication style and life context.
Understanding your experiences through the lens of autism can help make sense of long-standing patterns and support more informed decisions about what might be helpful going forward.
Common Experiences in Adults
- Feeling exhausted after social situations, even when enjoyable
- Finding it difficult to maintain friendships despite wanting connection
- Preferring deeper conversations over small talk
- Needing time to recover after busy or social days
- Having strong interests with a high level of focus or engagement
- Finding unwritten social rules unclear
- Sensory sensitivities (for example to sound, light, textures or smell)
- Preferring routines and finding unexpected changes difficult
- Taking things literally or missing implied meaning
- Feeling as though you are “performing” in social situations
What sets us apart
Timely access without compromising care
NHS waiting times for assessment are often long. Our pathway, from initial contact to final report, typically takes around 6 to 8 weeks. This is achieved through clear processes and efficient systems, while maintaining the depth and quality of assessment.
Integrative team approach
NICE guidelines recommend a multidisciplinary assessment. Each case within our service is reviewed through a clinical panel, bringing together different professional perspectives. Additional input from speech and language therapy or other disciplines is included where helpful.

Where assessment fits in your journey
A specialist adult autism assessment sits between initial exploration and ongoing support. Some adults come straight here; others start with Initial Support to talk things through first.
Initial Support
Not sure if assessment is the right next step? Our Initial Support sessions offer practical, neurodiversity-informed guidance with no commitment to a full pathway.
Adult Autism Assessment
A relaxed adult autism evaluation using ADOS-2 and structured developmental interview, delivered by our multi-disciplinary team — with a clear, plain-English report.
Post-Diagnostic Support
Diagnosis is a starting point, not a destination. Make sense of your identity through 1:1 programmes, small group cohorts, or flexible pay-as-you-go sessions.
Six clear steps, with flexibility where needed
We've designed every step of our adult autism assessment to be clear, well-structured, and led at your pace. From your first call right through to a results conversation — here's exactly what to expect.
Step 1 · Sent immediately on booking · ideally returned within 4 days
Information gathering
You'll receive a pre-assessment pack to complete online, helping us understand your developmental history and current experiences. This includes structured questionnaires and, where possible, input from someone who knows you well.
- Personal history and current experiences gathered
- Standardised questionnaires, including the CATI
- Optional input from a partner, family member, or friend
- Reviewed by a clinician to guide the assessment

Step 2 · Within 48 hours of questionnaires returned · 30-60 minutes
Initial consultation
Once your questionnaires are returned, your clinician arranges an initial consultation. This is an opportunity to talk through your experiences, ask questions, and decide together whether assessment is the right next step.
- Discuss what you have been noticing
- Talk through how assessment works
- Discuss reasonable adjustments and comfort
- Ask any questions you may have

Step 3 · Within 48 hours of your consultation
Confirm your appointment
Once your background information has been reviewed, we arrange your assessment. Appointments are booked at a time that works for you, either in person or online where appropriate.
- Appointment arranged around your schedule
- Clear confirmation and preparation guidance
- In-person or online options where appropriate

Step 4 · Assessment day · 2-3 hours, one sitting
Your assessment session
A single extended session focused on understanding your experiences in depth. This includes a detailed clinical discussion of your developmental history and current life, alongside structured elements where appropriate.
- In-depth clinical interview
- Focus on lived experience and personal history
- Structured tools used where appropriate
- Completed in one session unless shorter sessions requested

Step 5 · 1-2 weeks after your session
Multi-disciplinary panel review
All information is reviewed within a multidisciplinary panel, chaired by a Clinical Psychologist, in line with NICE guidelines. This is where the outcome is carefully considered, including whether autism or another formulation best reflects the full picture.
- All assessment and historic data carefully reviewed
- Multi-disciplinary input
- A thorough, evidence-based decision

Step 6 · Up to 7 days after panel · 45 minutes
